Arlie Jay Wichert
July 4, 1937 - February 13, 2022
Arlie Wichert was born to Elon and Erma (Duerksen) Wichert on July 4, 1937. He grew up on the family farm northwest of Fairview. He was the oldest of four children. While growing up he attended the North Mennonite Brethren Church where he accepted Christ as his savior at a young age.
He attended several years at Valley Center School with his sister Verla and cousins Bob and Norman Wichert. The school was located on the quarter of ground the family owned, farmed and lived on. He then attended Orienta school and graduated from Fairview High School in 1955. He furthered his education by attending Tabor College for 1 year where he was on the basketball team and tennis team. He then went on to get his Bachelors degree in Commercial Science from Enid Business College.
On August 1, 1958 he married the love of his life Betty LaVonne Epp. They were blessed with four boys, Greg, John, Jerome and Charles, 9 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.
Dad and mom enjoyed many trips to Branson, Colorado Springs and Red River. Many trips included family and friends.
Dad served in the church in different capacities over the years including church treasurer, and many years as a Boys Brigade leader. He worked with the Mennonite Central Committee for years organizing the local Mennonite meat canning and went on a mission trip to South Carolina.
He was employed by Waldon, Inc. for 18 years where he ran the printing department and later worked as the human resources manager.
He knew that God had called him to farm and he was blessed to farm and ranch his whole life. Many good life lessons were learned from many of the difficult things we experienced growing up on the farm and how dad handled them. Dad knew that everything he had was from God and he always made sure to give him thanks for everything. His whole life he said he would never leave the farm and he never did until God took him home on February 13, 2022.
He was preceded in death by his wife Betty; his father Elon and mother Erma Wichert. He is survived by four sons, Greg and Helen Wichert, John and Teresa Wichert, Jerome and Anita Wichert and Charles Wichert, all of Fairview, Oklahoma; nine grandchildren, Michael Nazworth, Michelle Williams, Ethan Wichert and wife Kelsey, Jessica Dahlem and husband Andy, Seth Wichert, Ashtyn Wichert, Kelsey Wall and husband Jacob, Caleb Wichert and Katrina Watkins and husband Baylor; nine great-grandchildren, Briley Sims, Britten Sims, Wyatt Doyel, Emmett Doyel, Josiah Wall, Elliana Wichert, Wyatt Dahlem, Dalton Turnham and Jayden Turnham; one brother, Delmore (Bud) Wichert and wife Candy of Fairview; two sisters, Verla Dick of Phoenix, Arizona and Benita Petres and husband Bill of E. Greenwich, Rhode Island.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, February 18, 2022 at the Fairview Mennonite Brethren Church with Pastor Travis Schmidt officiating. Interment will follow at the North M.B. Cemetery under the direction of Pierce Funeral Home, Fairview. Memorials may be made to the Mennonite Central Committee with the funeral home serving as custodian at P.O. Box 15, Fairview, OK 73737. Condolence may be made at www.piercefuneralhomes.com.
