Mildred L. Howerton was born in Bluff City Kansas on November 29, 1921, to David Casper Cooper and Fairie Irene (Spurgeon) Cooper. Mildred passed peacefully from this life to the next on July 31, 2022, at Summers Health Services in Okeene, OK.
Mildred started school in Freeport, Kansas, but after one year, her family moved to Anthony, Kansas, where she attended school until the 8th grade. Mildred and her sister, Irene, moved to Fairview, OK, to live with their aunt until she graduated from Fairview High School in 1939.
Mildred worked as a telephone operator for Southwestern Bell Telephone Company in Fairview, Oklahoma, on and off from 1940 to 1960. In 1944, she lived in Washington D.C. with Irene and worked for Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Co. for about a year. On May 13, 1945, Mildred married Dallas L. Howerton, and they made their home in Fairview, OK, where Dallas would eventually buy the Long-Bell Lumber Co. Mildred and Dallas worked side by side, operating Dallas Lumber, until they sold the lumberyard and retired in 1984
In her retirement, Mildred found her passion for the fine art of china painting. She was a member of several local clubs as well as the president of the World Organization of China Painters from 1981-1982 and treasurer from 1989-1990. Mildred traveled the world with her china painting friends, taking classes and painting more China than any one person would know what to do with. On November 29, 2021 she became a member of the Centenarians of Oklahoma.
Mildred is survived by one son, Michael Lynn Howerton and his wife Dixie, one daughter-in-law, Annie Howerton, five grandchildren, Kenny Howerton and wife Jayci, Kerry Westfahl and husband Owen, David Howerton and wife Jennifer, Brandon Howerton and wife Sheina, and Clayton Howerton, as well as thirteen great grandkids and seven great great grandkids.
