Fairview – Committal services for John Lester "Les" Awtrey, 91, who died early Thursday morning at Mercy hospital in Oklahoma City, will be at 10 AM Thursday at the Fairview Cemetery. A Memorial service will be at 10:45 AM at the First Baptist Church. The Rev. David Mendenhall will officiate. Services are under the direction of the Fairview Funeral Home.
Friends may call at the funeral home today from 9 AM to 9 PM.
Awtrey was born April 6, 1903 at Athens, Texas to J. F. and Laura Awtrey. He married Lillian Elizabeth "Snip" Ennen on April 24, 1926 at El Reno. She preceded him in death on June 19, 1986.
Awtrey ran the Hotel Coffee Shop from 1937 to 1941 and then moved to Oklahoma City where the couple ran restaurants. They returned to Fairview and ran the Hotel Café until 1964 when they purchased the Copper Top Café and later the Hiway Café.
After selling the Hiway Café Awtrey went to work as an advertising salesman for the Fairview Republican, where he worked until his retirement in 1993. He was a member of the Fairview Rotary Club and the First Baptist Church.
He is survived by his daughter, Mrs. Rick (Ann) Buck of Edmond; one brother, Dale Awtrey of Watonga; two sisters, Thelma Knapp of Watonga and May Stewart of Denver, Colorado; and three grandchildren.
Awtrey was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, four brothers and two sisters.
Memorials may be made through the funeral home to the First Baptist Church or the Fairview Senior Citizens Center.
