Lyle Holden Conner was born Feb. 22, 1926, in Cheyenne Valley, southeast of Waynoka, Okla., to Holden and Iris (Gillespie) Conner and passed away Sunday, March 8, 2015, at the VA Center in Clinton, Okla.

He attended first through third grade at Liberty, Mountain View and Del Plain country schools, and from the fourth through seventh grades at Quinlan, Okla. In 1938, his family moved northwest of Chester, Okla., and he attended Oak Grove School through the eighth grade. He attended high school in Seiling, graduating in 1944. Because of World War II, he was drafted and in August 1944, was inducted into the U.S. Army. He completed basic training at Fort Hood, Texas, and shipped overseas in February 1945. He served in the Pacific Theater during World War II, mostly in the Philippines (Saipan, Okinawa, Mindanao and Manila), also in Hawaii. Because of his ability to type and take shorthand he was assigned to the commanding officer at Battalion Headquarters for the 381st Infantry 96th Division. At the close of World War II, he was re-assigned to the Headquarters for the 86th Infantry. He received numerous medals and ribbons during his service to his country. He was discharged in September 1946, as a staff sergeant.

He married his high school sweetheart, Virginia Louthan, on Nov. 16, 1946, in Wellington, Kan. To this union were born four children, Janell, Dennis, Dale and Delores. They made their home in Chester, where he worked for Major County. They moved to Cheyenne Valley in 1947, and worked for Ira and Pearl Marlatt until 1950, when they moved to the “home place,” northwest of Chester, where they farmed and ranched together for the next 57 years.

He and Virginia were faithful and lifetime members of Elm Grove Assembly of God Church, where he served on Elm Grove Church Board for 31 years and served as Sunday School Superintendent for 35 years. He also served on the Major County Conservation Board for 33 years, serving as chairman for 15 years.

He and Virginia enjoyed many ski trips and a lot of laughter with his sister, Roseanna Langston and husband Gary and his brother Don Conner and wife Elmeda “Medie.”

Due to failing health, they moved to Grace Living Center, Clinton, Okla. in 2007. They lived there until Virginia’s passing in 2011.

In 2012, he moved to the Clinton Veteran Center, where he lived until his passing. - See more at: http://obituaries.enidnews.com/story/lyle-conner-1926-2015-746823272#sthash.t97WqEic.dpuf
