With heavy hearts, the family of Paula Kay (Smith) Gard announces her passing on January 8, 2025, at the age of 85. Paula was born November 6, 1939, in Tulsa, Oklahoma, to Richard L. and LaMoine (Harris) Smith. She graduated from Tulsa Central High School in 1957 and continued her education at Oklahoma State University, earning a degree in education. It was there that she joined the Gamma Phi Beta sorority and met her lifelong love, Gene Gard, a member of the Kappa Sigma fraternity. Paula and Gene were married on January 30, 1960, and would have celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary this year.
After settling in Fairview, Paula dedicated herself to making a meaningful difference in the lives of local children and families. She taught at the Progressive School for 12 years before finding her true passion in juvenile justice, working for the State of Oklahoma for 18 years. The impact Paula made on dozens of children, tirelessly fighting for them in youth and continuing to advocate for them well into adulthood, left a profound mark on our community. She stood firm in her beliefs, even if she was standing alone, and inspired many with her courage, authenticity and steadfast resolve.
In her final years, Paula enjoyed spending time with her great grandchildren, catching up with friends at the Senior Citizens Center, keeping tabs on her former clients and a little retail therapy. She faithfully supported her family, never missing a game, concert or opportunity to celebrate her loved ones.
Paula is survived by her husband, Gene of Fairview; son, Matt Gard of Fairview; daughter, Michelle McBride of Seiling; grandson, Tanner McBride and wife, Laci; grandson, Drake Gard and wife, Rachel; granddaughter, LaManda Rutz; granddaughter, Marissa Corlett and husband, Cole; grandson, Blake Gard; granddaughter Lauren Hamand and husband, Derrick; eight great grandsons and seven great granddaughters. She is preceded in death by her parents; brother, Richard "Mike" Smith; infant granddaughter, Kendra Jean Gard; and great-grandson Koulter Case McBride.
