Helen Ruth (Morgan) Eck was born May 22, 1936 to Alva J. and Josephine (Maidic) Morgan and passed away May 12, 2015 at the age of 78 years, 11 months, and 20 days. Ruth, as she was generally known, attended McCurtain Oklahoma Schools and then graduated from what is now known as Oklahoma State University in 1958. After graduation she was employed as an Assistant Home Demonstration Agent in Wewoka, Oklahoma, the county seat of Seminole County. Vernon Eck and Ruth Morgan were united in marriage at Wewoka in June 1961. A few days later Vernon was transferred to Oklahoma City. Ruth decided to change professions and, after certification, she began her teaching career in Oklahoma City. She later taught elementary school in Pampa, Texas and Great Bend, Kansas. In 1968 Vernon was transferred back to Oklahoma City and Ruth continued teaching and eventually retired from the Putnam City School System in 1988. She had many stories and pleasant memories derived from thirty years of working with young children.

In 1958 a local television station asked children from across the state to submit detailed letters nominating their favorite teacher. Ruth was not aware that four of her students had submitted letters and one letter was among five chosen out of 3,200 nominations. She was interviewed during an evening newscast and was presented with a “My Favorite Teacher” plaque. A local newspaper also ran an article describing the teaching techniques Ruth employed to motivate her students. This award was probably the highlight of her career.

Ruth enjoyed sewing and converted an upstairs bedroom for that purpose. She made curtains, drapes, and some of her clothing, including her wedding dress. Other hobbies included playing the piano and working in her vegetable garden and flower beds. She also clipped and filed many articles covering topics of interest. Ruth is survived by her husband, Vernon; brothers-in-law Walter Eck and wife, Kay, of Enid and Jerry Eck and wife, Barbara, of Yukon, and several nephews and nieces and their families. She was preceded in death by her parents, her only sister, Marie, one nephew, and one brother-in-law.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, Oklahoma Chapter with the funeral home serving as custodian.
