Funeral Services for Sophia Nightingale, age 80, of Fairview, will be held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, January 31, 2008 at the Church of God In Christ Mennonite of Fairview. Sophia Nightingale Nightingale was born to Alfred and Ida (Unruh) Nightingale on November 3, 1927 at Verden, Oklahoma. She departed this life very suddenly on January 28, 2008, reaching the age of eighty years. Mother grew up on the family farm near Verden, Oklahoma. As children we enjoyed her recollections of happy childhood days.

She was converted and baptized into the Church of God in Christ Mennonite on February 3, 1942. She was a great believer in prayer. Her consistent walk of life assures us that she is safe at home.

She was united in marriage to me, Vernon Nightingale on May 25, 1947, by Minister Eben Nightingale at Chickasha, Oklahoma, sharing life's joys and sorrows for sixty years. This union was blessed with one son and five daughters. They spent their married life at Fairview Oklahoma. She had a compassionate heart and enjoyed giving herself in quiet service to others. Hospitality was an important part of her life. She supported Dad when he did volunteer work, cheerfully keeping the family farm running smoothly.

She had a deep concern for her children and grandchildren often giving a gentle encouraging word. Life was not always easy for her but she bore her burden with a smile. We will especially miss her welcoming smile when we come home.

Left to cherish fond memories are her husband, Vernon of Fairview; one son Delbert and wife Irene of Fairview; five daughters, Phyllis and husband Ric Groene of Fairview, Arletta Nightingale of Moundridge, Kansas, Florine and husband Norman Penner of Wingo, Kentucky, Dianna and husband David Schmidt of El Campo, Texas, Twila and husband Lester Penner of Ste. Anne, Manitoba, Canada; seven brothers, Clarence and wife Erma of Dumas, Arkansas, Daniel and wife Sadie, Chickasha, Oklahoma, Glen and wife Roberta of Chickasha, Frank and wife Arvilla of Verden, John and wife Mary Ann of Dalhart, Texas, Cecil and wife Geneva of Pulaski, Iowa, Homer and wife Carolyn of Leland, Mississippi; three sisters, Dessie Koehn of Moundridge, Kansas, Mary Nightingale and Ruby Koehn, both of Montezuma, Kansas; two sisters-in-law, Eveline Nightingale of Montezuma, Kansas and Florence Nightingale of Chickasha; 15 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Her parents; granddaughter Kristy Schmidt; two brothers and one sister-in law preceded her in death.

Memorials may be made to the Sophia Nightingale Memorial with Fairview Funeral Home, Inc., acting as custodian.
