Bethel Cemetery

Nov. 22, 1922 ~ Dec. 1, 2005

Funeral services for Mary Marie (Dow) Gosney, 83, were Saturday, Dec. 3, 2005, at the Midway Assembly of God Church, west of Fairview. The Reverends Steve Dow and David White officiated. Burial followed in the Bethel Cemetery. Arrangements were by Fairview Funeral Home, Inc.

Mary Marie (Dow) Gosney was born Nov. 22, 1922 in the Dane Community, west of Fairview, to Enos Worden Dow and Georgia Bell (Patterson) Dow and passed away Thursday, Dec. 1, 2005, at the Fairview Fellowship Home. Mary grew up in the Dan Community and attended Dane School. After completing school, she worked for several families in the area. Mary was a charter member of the Midway Assembly of God Church. At sixteen, Mary started dating John Gosney, and they were married on Sept. 24, 1940, at the Midway Church. The couple continued to make Midway Assembly of God their church home for the remainder of their years.

In 1942, while Mary was pregnant with their first child, Mary Jane, John entered the United States Army. Mary Jane died a few days after the birth. Mary then moved to Galveston to be with her husband.

She worked for an insurance company until their second daughter, Carol, was born. After John's honorable discharge in 1946, the family returned to Major County and lived in Cheyenne Valley where they resided for 50 years. Mary worked on the farm, alongside of her husband, building fence, feeding cattle, driving tractor, tending chickens, and raising her family, which had grown to include two sons, John and Don. Mary was a wonderful seamstress, making clothes for her children, suits for John, re-upholstering the furniture and making quilts for each family member. She enjoyed gardening, baking, canning and cooking. Mary loved embroidering and crocheting and made numerous afghans, doilies and chair sets.

John and Mary looked forward to Fridays when they came to town to do their shopping, get Mary's hair fixed, and pick up the grandchildren to keep for the night. Mary enjoyed singing to the children, taking them fishing, and teaching them to sew and bake. Time spent with Grandma was always considered special. Mary loved her family. After entering the Fellowship Home in March 2003, her brightest days were those spent visiting with children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. All of their pictures were proudly displayed on the wall of her room.

Mary is survived by one daughter, Carol and Bill Dean, Richardson, Texas; two sons, John, Jr. and Kristin Gosney, and Don and Susan Gosney, all of Fairview; three brothers, Worden and Rachel Dow, of Fairview, Vance Dow, Longdale, Porter and Alresa Dow, Fort Worth, Texas; one sister Georgette and Lyle Levings, Fairview; six grandchildren, Rebecca Dean, Richardson, Christy and Jeremy Barnes, Garland, Texas, Andrea and Duane Harman, Tulsa, Leslie & Jason Downs, Tulsa, Brian and Michelle Gosney, Fairview, Kelli Gosney, Stillwater; and five great grandchildren, Madison Gosney Goelz, Dalton and Devin Barnes, Halle Harman and Kale Downs.

She was preceded in death by her parents, infant daughter, Mary Jane; husband, John; grandson, John W. Gosney III; and sister-in-law, Norma Dow.
