Ellen attended the Salem Methodist Church of San Jose, IL and was baptized April 1,1945. She attended a country school outside of San Jose, IL, grades 1st - 5th and went to San Jose School, where she graduated May of 1956. Ellen was born into a large family with 11 siblings, which throughout her teenage years she helped her mother with the cooking and care of her younger siblings. This love of kids led her to take care of her neighbor's children after graduation and in the summer of 1957, she moved to Enid, Oklahoma to help her sister and brother-in-law with their small kids.
From there, she moved to Harlingen, TX, Air Force Base, where her brother-in-law was transferred. This move led her to the love of her life, Daryl Dean Mason, who was stationed at the same Air Force Base. They married after a short 4-month courtship on November 17,1957, and were married until the death of her husband shy of 58 years. Out of this true love came two sons and four daughters: Diana, Gail, Gary, Pam, Tina and Charles.
Throughout the years, she was involved in several of her kids' activities: Sunday school teacher, Brownie and Cub Scout Leader, Cheerleader sponsor. She was secretary for Fairview Airport while her husband was the manager, worked at the Campbell's IGA Grocery in Fairview, Richard's Grocery Store in Ringwood until her retirement and the Ames Korner Store.
She was known for her sewing and the many rag dolls she made. She had a love for cooking. Homemade noodles, angel food cake and airport punch were favorites of her family. She made the best damn fried chicken. In her later years, the Ringwood Marc Center was a second home to her (she was awarded VIP Recognition of Service for Volunteer). She enjoyed participating in the activities of bingo, movie day, ice cream socials and painting.
Ellen's greatest enjoyment in life were her kids and her grandchildren. She always stayed close to her family in Illinois even though they were miles apart. Group phone calls and Facetiming with her siblings was a great enjoyment she always looked forward to.
