The funeral for Mary E. Bell, 98-year-old Ames resident, will be 11 a.m. today, Aug. 24, 2007, at Ames Church of Christ. John Sheffield will officiate. Kendall Poland will assist. Burial will follow in Ames Cemetery under the direction of Henninger-Allen Funeral Home.
Mary was born Aug. 11, 1909, in Ames, to John N. and Daisy (Denny) Hughes and passed away Monday, Aug. 20, 2007, at Kenwood Manor.
She attended Ames Public School, graduating in 1928. While in school she participated in sports, which led to her love of sports throughout her life.
Mary married Kermit Bell July 26, 1929, in Winfield, Kan. They were married 58 years. They lived most of their married life in the Ames community. They had five children. Mary was a housewife for most of her life. However, in her later years she worked at the Chit-Chat Café in Enid, the Drummond Café and the Ames Lunch Room. She also delivered the Enid Morning News in the Ames community for several years. She was a member of Ames Church of Christ.
Mary is survived by three daughters, Peggy, Tura Lu and Dixie; one son, Danny; 12 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; 19 great-great-grandchildren; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Kermit; one son, Jim; one son-in-law, Orville; and two half-sisters, Audra Bland and LaVancha Morehouse.
