A memorial service for Mary Helen "MiMi" Zachary, 80, will be conducted at 11 a.m., Saturday, May 8, in the First United Methodist Church, Marietta, with the Rev. Tony Caro officiating. Mrs. Zachary passed away Tuesday, April 27, 2004, in Mercy Health Love County, Marietta, under the care of Dr. J.T. O'Connor, nursing staff, Royal Crest Hospice staff (Kathryn, Deanna, Lanna and Rachel) and Linda Graham.
Mary Helen, the eldest of four children of Grover C. and Charley "Tot" Cogdell McMakin, was born February 21, 1924, in Argyle, Texas. She was raised in Lubbock, Texas, and spent her high school years in Oklahoma City. She then went to college at Oklahoma A&M (now Oklahoma State University) and pledged Pi Beta Phi Sorority. After graduating, she married Worth A. Zachary on December 20, 1946, in Oklahoma City. They resided in Amarillo, Texas, later moving to Marietta, where Worth eventually became President of the First National Bank. Mary Helen stayed at home raising their two children, Jan and Vic "Bub," until they were junior high age, at which time she became a teller at the bank. The couple retired from the banking business over 30 years ago and moved to Houston, Texas. Following the death of her husband in 1980, Mrs. Zachary returned to Marietta to make her home. She was active with the Chickasaw Regional Library System, Friends of the Library, and a member and former treasurer of the First United Methodist Church.
Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Worth A. Zachary on November 15, 1980; and her sister, Shirley Yarbrough Townsend on December 29, 1997.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Vic "Bub" and Itza Zachary of Houston; a daughter and son-in-law, Jan and Tom Bouldin of Arlington, Texas; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Joe and Tincy McMakin of Shreveport, Louisiana and Ret. Col. Grover S. and Betty McMakin of Boerne, Texas; three grandchildren, Valerie and David White of Denton, Texas, Vic Zachary Jr. of Knoxville, Tennessee, and Hilary Zachary of Houston; three nieces, Diane Boland of Ardmore, Sally Southerland of Marietta and MaConda Falting of Shreveport; three nephews, Wally McMakin and Grover McMakin, both of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and Kelly McMakin of San Antonio, Texas; former brother-in-law, John Yarbrough of Ardmore; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Honorary pallbearers were "The Girls," Kathryn Miller, Deanna Stewart, Lanna Terrell, Rachel Fernandez and Linda Graham.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home Friday, May 7, from 7 to 8:30 p.m.
The family requests memorial contributions to Royal Crest Hospice, 208 Plaza, Madill, OK 73446.
Arrangements are under the direction of Flanagan-Watts Funeral Home, Marietta.
