Services for Afton A. Williams Sr., 75, of Rubottom, were held at 2 p.m.
Tuesday, June 5, in the Rubottom Baptist Church with Bro. Johnny Reed and Bro.
Robert Hogan officiating.
Mr. Williams was born May 8, 1926, in Rubottom, the son of Lonnie A. and Ollie
Mae Medlin Williams. He died Friday, June 1, 2001, in Mercy Memorial Health
Center, Ardmore.
Mr. Williams returned to Love County in 1988 to make his home. He and Mazi
Scribner were married November 27, 1949, in Mobeetie, Texas. Mr. Williams was
employed as a warehousing superintendent in Alaska and also owned an auto parts
store in Santa Fe, New Mexico, in the 1970s. He served in the U.S. Army, the
24th Infantry Division, during World War II, serving in Occupied Japan. At the
time of his death, Mr. Williams was president of the Rubottom Cemetery
Committee. He was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include his wife, Mazi Williams of the home; a son and daughter-in-
law, Afton Jr. and Sandi Williams of Terrell, Texas; two daughters and sons-in-
law, Pamela Kay and Billy Joe Shelden of Kenton and De'Aun and Benny Chavez of
Gallup, New Mexico; a brother, the Rev. Wayne "Buster" Williams of Shady Side,
Maryland; 13 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Mr. Williams was preceded in death by his mother in 1987 and his father in
1988.
Serving as pallbearers were grandsons and great-grandsons, Benny Afton Chavez,
Doug Chavez, Craig Chavez, Jeff Chavez, Ian Berry Williams, Caleb Williams,
Zakary Williams, Jeb Shelden, Dillion Scott and Matthew Chavez. Honorary
pallbearers were George Lowe Jr., Virgil Williams, Oscar Williams and Herman
Roberson.
Interment was in the Rubottom Cemetery under the direction of Flanagan-Watts
Funeral Home.
