Services for James L. Steel were Saturday at 2:30 p.m. in the First United Methodist Church with Rev. Golden Shook officiating.
Born June 30, 1903, in Pickens County, Indian Territory, Mr. Steel died November 12, 1992, in Deaconess Hospital, Oklahoma City, at the age of 89.
He had spent his early childhood in Carter County and attended Ardmore Schools. He graduated from Oklahoma A&M College in 1929 with a degree in Animal Husbandry. Mr. Steel moved to Marietta in 1981, and married Thelma Anderson Lemons November 18, 1981. They had lived in Oklahoma City since 1989, moving there from Marietta.
Mr. Steel was a member of the Masonic Lodge, Past Patron of the Eastern Star, and had served on the Soil Conservation Board for 15 years and on the Love County S.O.D.A. Board. An active member of the OSU Alumni Association, he was a member of the Marietta Lions Club for many years, a current member of the Putnam City North Lions Club, and a member of the First United Methodist Church in Marietta.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Thelma Steel of the home in Oklahoma City; a step-daughter, Jo Hackney, also of Oklahoma City; a brother-in-law, Burton French of Alexandria, Virginia; a sister-in-law, Hazel Steel of Dallas, Texas; several step-grandchildren, step-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Mr. Steel was preceded in death by his first wife, Mildred Monson Steel on June 16, 1980.
Masonic services were conducted in Rosehill Cemetery, Ardmore, with Anderson-Kennedy Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Assisting as pallbearers were Lee L. Lemons, Clark Tipton, David Roberson, Wayne Northcutt, David Vernon and Jack Tow.
