Graveside services for the Rev. Parlee D. 'Nipp' Russell, 75, of Leon, were held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, August 7, in the Simon Cemetery in Love County, south of Wilson, with the Rev. Jimmy Taylor and the Rev. Jim Gillum officiating.
Mrs. Russell was born August 7, 1926, at Simon, the daughter of Con and Jessie Pearl 'Powell' Nipp. She died Sunday, August 4, 2002, at Denton Community Hospital in Denton, Texas.
A resident of Leon for the past 40 years, Mrs. Russell was raised in Love County southeast of Wilson. She attended school at Simon, Orr and graduated from Meadowbrook School in 1947. She and George William 'Willie' Russell were married June 23, 1945, in Marietta. He preceded her in death December 29, 1997. Mrs. Russell was employed by the Marietta Pants Factory for 13 years prior to embarking upon her nursing career. After she left the Pants Factory, she attended the Vo-Tech Center in Ardmore, receiving her LPN license in 1975. Although gainfully employed by area nursing homes and hospitals, she continued her education, receiving an associate degree in nursing at Murray State College in Tishomingo in 1985. Mrs. Russell then attended East Central University where she received a bachelor of arts degree in adult ageing with geriatric counseling in 1991. She retired from the Oklahoma Veterans Center of Ardmore, but continued to work for area nursing homes and the local hospital while also serving as a minister.
Survivors include four daughters and sons-in-law, Linda Lawson of Minot, North Dakota, Sharon and Jim Young of Bedford, Texas, Martha and James Greer of Ringling and Georgia and Jerry Holland of Sanger, Texas; two sons, Bill and Joe Russell of Leon; five sisters, Lorene Montgomery of Marietta, Nadine Goode of Wilson, Oleta Self of Leon, Carolyn Westmoreland of Ardmore and Linda Sue Williams of Rubottom; six brothers, Chalres "Pretty Boy" Nipp of Lyons, Nebraska, Clyde Nipp of Overbrook, Conver, Gene and Donnie Nipp, all of Wilson, John and Curtis Nipp of Overbrook; 14 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and numerous other relatives and friends.
Mrs. Russell was also preceded in death by her father, Con Nipp on May 30, 1978; her mother, Jessie Pearl Nipp on March 21, 1985; three sisters, Dorlene Nipp in 1936, Meady Mae Vernon in April 1999, and Elnora Phillips in February 2000; a brother, Claud Nipp in January 1990; a granddaughter, Tressie, and great-grandson, Aaron.
Serving as pallbearers were nephews Dale Vernon, Keith Phillips, Jay Goode, Mark Montgomery, Lynn Self and Andy Nipp. Honorary pallbearers were all of her other nephews.
Services were under the direction of Alexander Funeral Home, Wilson.
