Services for Johnie Harrison Benton, 77, were conducted June 30 at 10 a.m. in the First Baptist Church, Idalou, Texas, with the Rev. Calvin Gray, pastor, officiating assisted by Rev. Reginald Bridges.
Mr. Benton died June 28, 1993, at his residence. He was under hospice care.
Born in Grayson County, Texas, Mr. Benton married Eunice Tipton Blakemore on December 24, 1939, in Madill. The couple moved in 1951 to Idalou where he was a farmer, welder and truck driver. He was a member of First Baptist Church and of Idalou Masonic Lodge 1220 where he served as Worshipful Master in 1960 and 1961.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Eunice Benton of the home; two sons, Clay Blakemore of Mineola, Texas and J.T. Benton of Buda, Texas; two daughters, Dixie Lanehart of Houston, Texas, and Elaine Benton of Hurst, Texas; two brothers, Ed Benton of Madill and Ray Benton of Middleburg, Florida; a sister, Georgia Carpenter of Kaufman, Texas; sister-in-law, Emma Leeper of Marietta; brother-in-law, Clark Tipton of Marietta; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Services were directed by White Funeral Home with interment in the Idalou Cemetery.
