Etta’s soul took flight Sunday morning, January 20, 2019 from Ardmore’s Mercy Hospital at 3:40 a.m. She was 73 years, 11 months and two days old, almost four years past the promised years.
A lifelong resident of Marietta, she is a 1964 graduate of Marietta High School. Following high school, she immediately began employment with Marietta Sportswear, until its closure 26 years later. Afterwards, Etta began employment with White-House Designs until its closure, which issued causation for her retirement. Etta accepted Christ as Lord and Savior during her youth and was baptized by Pastor Hubert H. Harris in Lake Murray Spillway. A charter member of New Zion Baptist Church, she served as office clerk. Etta was the first to arrive for Sunday School each Sunday morning to prepare bulletins for the church service. She was one of the four Halstied Sisters, a gospel singing group, who originated before their teens. Additionally, she was a member of the Love County Community Choir since its origin. Etta is the eight of 10 children.
She is preceded in death by her parents, William ‘Bill’ and Bessie Halstied; an infant son, Derrick Dewayne; three brothers, LaBraska Halstied, Jimmie McCarroll and Herculee McCarroll; and two sisters, Lorene Foreman and Lovetta Douglass.
Precious memories of her life are cherished by countless nieces and nephews; two sisters, Dorothy (L.J.) Lornes and Willie (Jobie) Kirk; two brothers, Perry (Rebecca) Halstied and Hayze Halstied; a brother-in-law, Lewis Douglass; and a sister-in-law, Hattie McCarroll.
Family will receive friends Friday evening from 7 until 8 p.m. at Kirk Funeral Home, Ardmore.
