Thackerville teen killed in crash The Thackerville community remains in shock over the sudden death of Drake Wells. An acquaintance of the family told the story of Wells’ birthday celebrations with friends cut short by a fatal crash. Drake Wells, 19, was the 2017 Valedictorian at Thackerville High School. Described as a leader encourager and a willing helper, Wells was attending college at Northeastern State University in Tahlequah with his sights set on becoming a plastic surgeon.

He and four friends were traveling Sunday evening, September 17 at approximately 10:41 p.m. to have a small get-together for Wells’ birthday. The vehicle they were in departed the roadway to the right, striking a guard rail on the Welling Bridge 2.1 miles east and 4.1 miles south of Tahlequah. The vehicle then came back onto the roadway, departed to the left and went through the railing and off the bridge. It fell approximately 35 feet into the river below on its top, fully submerging under the water and trapping all passengers inside. First responders extricated the driver, 18-year-old Donovan Caldwell of Muskogee, and passengers Wells; Jessica Swartwout, 18, of McAlester; Lily Murphy, 18, of Gentry, Arkansas; and Rhiann Seely, 18, of Salina. All were pronounced dead at the scene by medical personnel. Wells is the son of Damon Wells and LaDona Voyles-Wells and the grandson of Ronny Voyles Sr. and Helen Wells.

Funeral services are set at 10 a.m., Friday, September 22 at Marietta’s First Baptist Church.
