Graveside services for Billy Lee Leverett, 74, of Ardmore, were held at 2 p.m., Thursday, March 12 in the Mt. Zion Cemetery, Thackerville, with Lonnie Dodson officiating.
Born May 5, 1934 in Holdenville, the son of Cecil and Vergie Jarman Leverett, he died Sunday, March 8, 2009 at his residence in Ardmore.
Mr. Leverett grew up just outside of Collinsville, Texas, then made his home in Thackerville for many years. He had been a resident of Ardmore since 1987. He and Lou Alma Chambers were married in Durant on September 13, 1959. A fabricator/welder, Mr. Leverett worked for National Supply for more than 25 years. After the company closed in 1987, he was employed by Delta Mining as a welder and also an employee of McCabe Minerals. Mr. Leverett then started Santa Fe Iron Works in Ardmore, a company he owned and operated for a number of years. Mr. Leverett truly loved the town of Thackerville and served as its mayor for several years. Just recently he helped with the rock and granite “Welcome to Thackerville” signs that mark the city limits. As a young man, Leverett enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include his wife, Lou Alma Leverett of the home; a son, Steven Leverett of Springer; a daughter, Kelley Pettie of Shay; two brothers, Bob Leverett of Woodbine, Texas and Jack Leverett of Collinsville; and six grandchildren, Katelyn, Megan, Brooklyn, Elizabeth, Ashlee and Sarah.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Jerry Franklin “Peewee” Leverett.
Memorial contributions may be made to the National Emphysema/COPD Association in care of the funeral home.
