Mr. Hicks was born March 1, 1939, at Jimtown, the son of Henry Thomas “Boss” and Minnie Mae Whittington Hicks. After a long illness, he died Thursday, January 5, 2012, in the VA Center, Sulphur, where he received excellent care during his last days.
Raised at Jimtown, Richard really enjoyed growing up with his brothers and sisters. He loved going on their dates with them. Richard was a graduate of Leon High School and attended Southeastern Oklahoma State University, Durant. As a young adult, he served as a Specialist E-5 with the Security Intelligence Service Agency of the United States Army. He was decorated with The Good Conduct Medal and The Letter of Appreciation. He qualified as “Expert Rifleman” with the M-1 and “Sharpshooter” with the M-14. He also completed the ASA School, became a Basic Analyst, and later, Analyst Equipment Operator. He later taught that same class and had several opportunities awaiting him in the public sector upon discharge. He was proud to have been a computer programmer in the early days of computers. He successfully completed courses on the Geneva Convention, Military Justice, Code of Conduct, Battle Indoctrination and ATP 21-114. Although most of his work with the Security Intelligence Agency was top secret, he was proud of his service. He was a Vietnam Era Veteran but served mostly in Korea. Richard made his home with his wife of 49 years, the former Helen Marie Smith. They were married May 8, 1962 in Thackerville. They lived in Texas, Kansas and Oklahoma before settling in the Oklahoma City area in 1979. Mr. Hicks was a Computer Programmer Co-Owner at C-Pac in Ardmore after programming for First National Bank of Ardmore. He later became a sales manager for the industrial bearings industry and successfully engineered many parts. He retired from The Federal Corporation in 2003. He always took pride in his work ethic. Richard and Helen moved to Mustang after his retirement. Mr. Hicks was a Mason and a member and Past President of the Ardmore Jaycees. He received the “JCI Senatorship” award while President. He was a member of Highland Hills Baptist Church in Oklahoma City and loved the Book of Revelation in the Bible. He loved his grandchildren and following their current interest. He was an avid OU football fan. His hobbies included fishing, golf, talking politics and watching “The Thunder”, OU basketball and football.
Preceding him in death were his parents; three brothers Delbert Hicks, G.W. Hicks, and H.T. Hicks; and a sister, Loyce Rowe.
