will follow at the Mt. Zion Cemetery, Thackerville.
Gwendolyn was born on April 17, 1943, in Tulsa
to Gwendolyn Lewis and Thurman P. Bates. She
grew up in Tulsa, Oklahoma City, and surrounding
metro areas. In 1980 she moved to Enid and after
raising three sons, she continued her education
at Phillips University, obtaining a bachelor's
degree in Library Science. In 1992, Gwendolyn
moved to Thackerville and later completed a
master's degree in counseling at Southeastern
Oklahoma State University. Gwendolyn was an
educator, librarian and counselor for over 25
years for Thackerville Public Schools.
Gwendolyn had a passion for volunteering and
assisting her community. She was a member of the
Thackerville Community Church. Gwendolyn loved
to read fiction, primarily suspense and mystery
thrillers. Her favorite authors were David
Baldacci and Mary Higgins Clark. She also
enjoyed traveling on back roads through small
towns, seeking out small town diners to
experience. Gwendolyn loved spending time with
her family and friends. Her grandchildren were
her greatest joy.
She is preceded in death by two husbands, Samuel
Meade Bailey and Bruce L. Hawes and her parents,
Gwendolyn and Thurman Bates.
Left behind to cherish her memory are her sons,
Charles Martin, Jr. of Thackerville, William
Martin and wife Kathleen of Choctaw, and Richard
Hawes and wife Brenda of Krum, Texas; father of
Charles and William, Charles E. Martin of Tulsa;
brother, Mark Bates and wife Nancy of Olathe,
Kansas; sisters, Paula Neely and husband Mike of
San Antonio and Paulette Cook and husband Jim of
Choctaw; grandchildren, Galen Hawes, Cheyenne
Martin, Logan Hawes, and Jessi Martin;
great-grandson, Sean Hawes; and numerous nieces,
nephews, step-grandchildren and
step-great-grandchildren.
