Born November 24, 1931, in Coke County, Texas, the daughter of Robert Ray and Aura Mae Grissom Hamilton, she died Thursday, January 18, 2018, at Lubbock.

At the age of five Mrs. Monkres moved to her grandfather’s farm, north of Lubbock. She attended New Deal School and graduated from Lubbock Senior High School in 1949. A degree in home economics education was earned in 1953 from Texas Tech University. While at Tech, she was a member of Future Teachers of America, Alpha Chi Omega, and Phi Upsilon Omicron. Mrs. Monkres taught first grade at George R. Bean School in Lubbock for three years prior to moving to Irving, Texas in 1966. Teaching first grade at Lee Britain Elementary was a position for 18 years. She earned a master’s of education from Texas Women’s University in 1978. Mrs. Monkres served as Director of Slingerland Summer Session for teacher training for three years. She was Teacher of the Year from Lee Britain in 1979-80 and was awarded Life Membership in Lee Britain PTA. She retired from teaching, leaving the Round Rock School District in 1986, moving to Arlington, Texas, where she lived for 30 years. She was a member of Lovers Lane Methodist Church, Irving Book Review Club, Retired Teachers of Irving, and Christian Women’s. She was a volunteer for the Love County Military Museum and served on the Board of Trustees.

She was preceded in death by her parents and daughter, Lene Nuckols.

Survivors include her husband, T. Eugene Monkres; son, Zane Henry of Lubbock; grandchildren, Benjamin Henry, Janai Thompson, Andrew and Katie Thompson of Lewisville, Texas and David Nuckols; brother, Bob Hamilton and wife Mary of Lubbock; sister, Jeanette Meinecke and husband Steve of Lubbock; and Gene’s daughters, Rhetta Monkres Schultz and Karen Monkres Cagle.

Memorial donations may be made to public or school libraries to purchase young children’s books.
