The body of a 24-year-old former county woman was found August 20 near Oxford, Mississippi. Jennifer Hyman, the daughter of Terry and Linda Hyman, was last seen August 18 at a truck stop in Oklahoma City.
Her parents had reported her missing, but it wasn’t until late last week that her disappearance was linked to the discovery of an unidentified body outside Oxford.
Her nude body was discovered by railroad workers late in the afternoon on August 20 on a sandbar under the Tallahatchie River bridge in north Lafayette County. Investigators said it appeared the body was thrown from the Highway 7 bridge in an attempt to hide it in the water. It had been there 24 to 48 hours before being found.
An autopsy was performed August 21, and it was ruled she had died of manual strangulation.
Mississippi officers posted her description on the National Criminal Information Center computer network. An Oklahoma City officer saw the posting and matched it with their missing person’s report.
Hyman was a student at the University of Central Oklahoma in Edmond. She was a 1997 graduate of Stillwater High School.
She and her family moved from Leon when she was four years of age.
Investigators with the Lafayette County Sheriff’s Department reported Wednesday that little progress had been made in determining who killed her.
The FBI, OSBI and Oklahoma City authorities are assisting in the investigation.
Her obituary is on Page 4 of this edition of the Monitor.
