Interment followed in the Lakeview Cemetery, Marietta.
Born May 26, 1938 at Slick, the daughter of William Alven and Velma Corinne Mayhugh Wheatley, she died Monday, August 16, 2021 at Mercy Hospital, Ardmore. Joan grew up in the Oklahoma City area and graduated from Capitol Hill High School. She retired after 16 years as an auditor for the Oklahoma Tax Commission. Joan was of the Church of Christ faith. She enjoyed traveling, sharing recipes, ceramics, and crafting. After retirement, Joan participated in swimming lessons, belly dancing, and DJ school. She was very adventurous and liked trying new things. Joan had many interests in life, but perhaps the thing she loved most was spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, Joan was preceded in death by great-granddaughter, Allison; nephew, Glen "Gil" Gilbert, Jr.; son-in-law, Darryl "Mack" Gilbert; and brothers-in-law, Glen Gilbert and Gordon "Pee Wee" Fultz.
Survivors include daughters, Connie Gilbert of Leon and Anita Brown and husband Apolinar "Poli" Guerrero of Van Horn, Texas; brother, Bill Wheatley and wife Paula of Oklahoma City; sister, Karen Gilbert of Marietta; five grandchildren, Sherry Diaz and husband Dario, Tricia Gilbert and husband Jesse Burk, Adam Gilbert, Gary Gilbert, and Brad Brown; nine great-grandchildren, Logan, Isaac, Robby, Alex, Ashley, Brayden, Lucas, Madysen, and Lily; two great-great-grandchildren, Darryl Jr. and Lily; and two nephews.
Her grandsons served as pallbearers.
