Services for Travis William Givens, 93, of Marietta, were held at 2 p.m., Monday, February 26, in the Marietta Church of Christ, with Bro. Travis Huffman officiating. Interment was in Lakeview Cemetery, Marietta.
Born August 5, 1913, in the Bowles community, Love County, the son of William Charles and Mattie Flanagan Givens, he died Friday, February 23, 2007, from injuries received in an automobile accident on Highway 77 north of Marietta.
A retired farmer/rancher, Mr. Givens had been a resident of Love County his entire life. He started his farming/Ranching career in 1933 and had lived on the same farm in the Shady Dale community since 1940. He attended school at Shady Dale from the second through eighth grades, at Bowles in the ninth grade, and the tenth through twelfth grades at Meadowbrook. He was known as the “Horseshoe Pitching Champion.” Mr. Givens enjoyed playing horseshoes and assisted with the horseshoe pitching competition for the annual Love County Frontier Days celebration for many years. He loved his church, the Marietta Church of Christ, gardening, and visiting with family and friends.
Survivors include four nephews, Roy Lee and Shirley Givens, Craig Villines and Make and Vanessa McWhirt, all of Ardmore, and Phillip Griffith of Madill; four nieces, Rosetta and Eddie Almon, Marie Villines and Cindy and Norris Wayne McWhirt, all of Ardmore, and Marilyn and Jack Griffith of Lebanon; and a host of other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Leroy Givens; a sister, Christine Givens; a sister-in-law, Lucille Givens; and a great-nephew, Joe Griffith.
Pallbearers were David McGehee, Craig Villines, Larry Taliaferro, Danny Frazier, Randy Frazier, Larry Roberts and Charley Roberts. Honorary pallbearers were the members of the Adult Bible Class of the Marietta Church of Christ.
