Services for Samuel D. “Papa” Gaither, 86, of Marietta were held at 10:00 a.m., Monday, March 19 in Marietta’s Eastside Baptist Church with Rev. Jerry Turner and Rev. Jody Ham officiating.

Interment followed in Lakeview Cemetery, Marietta.

Born March 21, 1925 in Dillard, the son of William Herbert and Bonnie Gilliam Gaither, he died Tuesday, March 13, 2012 in Lake Country Nursing Center, Marietta. Raised on a farm near Marietta, Mr. Gaither married Trelvia Conway on January 24, 1947. She preceded him in death on December 28, 1958, leaving him with three children, Sherry, Myrna and Danny. On January 29, 1960, he married Kittie Miller. Mr. Gaither was a carpenter, teacher, preacher, farmer and day care owner. Papa loved the Lord and devoted his life to the ministry which always included children. Mr. Gaither attended Greenville School, seminary at Southwestern Bible College in Oklahoma City and obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in Education from Oklahoma City University and a Master’s Degree in Education from Sam Houston State College in Huntsville, Texas. He and Kittie opened the Christian Day Care Center in Marietta in 1975 and devoted themselves to the children and their families for the next 30 years.

Preceding him in death were his parents; the mother of his children, Trelvia Gaither; five brothers, Paul, Willis, Silas, James and Phillip Gaither; and two sisters, Morine Ward and Billie Jean Couser.

Survivors include his wife, Kittie Mae Gaither of the home; one son, Danny Gaither of Marietta; two daughters and son-in-law, Sherry and Danny Dvorak of Ardmore and Myrna Gaither of Marietta; seven grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Serving as pallbearers were grandsons, Micah Poplin, Lucas Poplin, Chris Dvorak and Drew Dvorak; and Stephen Ortega and David Bell. Honorary bearers were Danny Dvorak, Jason Gaither, Jay Barrick and Ruben Alvarado.
