Private family services were held for Eldridge Colston, 90, of
Marietta, with interment in Lakeview Cemetery, Marietta. Arrangements were
directed by Flanagan-Watts Funeral Home, Marietta.
Born November 16, 1915 in Marietta, the son of Charlie and Florence Payne
Colston, he died Friday, April 21, 2006, in the VA Center, Norman.
Mr. Colston had been a resident of Marietta all of his life until moving
to Norman 1-1/2 years ago. He and Mary Elizabeth Tucker were married
December 10, 1935, in Marietta. Mr. Colston attended Southeastern Oklahoma State
University and was a member of the Murray State College Board of Regents for a
number of years, serving as chairman. He also owned the Ford dealership in
Marietta for 20 years and was a wholesaler/retailer for Mobil Oil Company for 30
years. A veteran of World War II, he served in the U.S. Army in the Pacific
Theatre. Mr. Colston was very active in the American Legion on the local level
serving as Post Commander for many years, was past State Commander and held
several National offices. He served on the Oklahoma Department of Veterans
Affairs for eight years, holding the position of chairman. Mr. Colston also
represented Love and Marshall counties in the State Senate from 1960 to 1964. He
served as the secretary of the Love County Election Board for several years and
was active in the Marietta Lions Club.
An avid sports enthusiast, Mr. Colston was a high school and college
football and basketball official for more than 40 years and was inducted into
the Oklahoma Football Officials Hall of Fame in 2004. During this time he also
served as the president of the Oklahoma Secondary Schools Activities
Association. Mr. Colston was a strong supporter of the University of Oklahoma
athletics. He was a member of Marietta’s First Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Colston of Norman; three sons and
daughter-in-law, David Colston and Chris Colston of Oklahoma City, and Don and
Anne Colston of Midwest City; a daughter and son-in-law, Mary Lynn and Jim
Carlile of Perryton, Texas; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Claude M. Colston; and
three sisters, Edith Alexander, Jo Alexander and Louise White.
