James Auston Reed of Ardmore, OK, formerly of Marietta, OK, was born
September 26, 1919, at Leon, OK, the son of Jim and Lola Martin Reed. He
passed away Wednesday, May 19, 2010, in Mercy Memorial Health Center,
Ardmore, at the age of 90, the last of 15 siblings.
Mr. Reed had been a resident of Love County most of his life, just
recently moving to Ardmore to make his home. He and Maxine Hicks were
married October 30, 1948, in Gainesville, TX. A veteran of World War II,
Mr. Reed served in the U.S. Army from March 1941 to November 1945. He
served 2-1/2 years overseas in campaigns in the Rhineland, Ardennes,
Northern France and Central Europe and was awarded the Good Conduct
Medal, the EAME Theater Ribbon and Four Bronze Stars, the Bronze Star
Medal, the American Theater Ribbon, the American Defense Service Ribbon
and the WWII Victory Ribbon. Mr. Reed was also recognized for his
qualifications with a marksman rifle in October 1943. He was a member of
the Burch Bros. Post of the American Legion.
Mr. Reed was an auto mechanic and also worked as a truck driver and
operated a wrecker service. Auston also worked for the Ford company
until the couple became owners and operators of a Texaco service and
repair station on Hwy 77 in Marietta. They eventually moved the service
station to the southeast corner of Hwy 32 and I-35. He enjoyed traveling
and watching his grandchildren participate in sporting events,
especially watching Chase race motorcross and Paige play softball. Mr.
Reed was of the Protestant faith.
Preceding him in death were his parents; two grandchildren, Chad Lewis
Reed and Blair Reed; and a great-granchild, Auston Gage Reed.
He is
survived by his wife, Maxine Reed of the home; a son and
daughter-in-law, Steve and Cindy Reed of Lone Grove, OK; a daughter
Monica Reed of Ardmore; and two grandchildren, Chase and Paige Reed.
Serving as bearers will be Robin Hicks, Shane Hicks, Gaither Hicks,
Darrell Reed, Raymond Reed and Don Reed. Honorary bearers are George
Mechler, Shane Dodson, Leon Brown and John McBride.
