Services for David Lawrence Black Jr., 59, of Burneyville, were held at 2 p.m., Monday, November 10, at Marietta’s First Baptist Church, with the Rev. Tommy Higle and the Rev. Sherry Kendrick officiating.

Interment was in the Jimtown Cemetery.

Born October 23, 1949, in Rubottom, the son of David Lawrence Sr. and Jessie J. Hallum Black, he died Thursday, November 6, 2008, in Oklahoma City. A resident of the Burneyville area all of his life, Mr. Black graduated from Turner High School in 1967. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in agriculture from Oklahoma State University in 1971. He and Shirley Ann Emerson were married August 4, 1973, at the First United Methodist Church, Wilson. Mr. Black was a farmer and rancher all of his life and was a very skilled mechanic. He was a family-oriented man, always a devoted husband, and held a special place in his heart for his three daughters and grandson, Derrick. Some of his favorite hobbies included visiting with his many friends, driving his Peterbilt truck, restoring and driving his 1972 Chevelle SS, playing pool and watching wrestling on television. Mr. Black was a member of Marietta’s First Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Shirley of the home; daughters and son-in-law, Laura Black of Burneyville, Kylene and Kyle Seele of McAlester, and Lynzi Black of Oklahoma City; parents, David and Jessie Black of Burneyville; a brother and sister-in-law, Dr. Charles and Ann Black of Ardmore; a grandson, Derrick Seele; a nephew, John Black; a niece, Julie Emerson; brothers-in-law, Meril Emerson and wife, Brenda, and Thomas Wayne Emerson; aunts, Mary Lou Hallum and Linda Schwarz; an uncle, Rayford Hallum; and numerous other family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, John and Mattie Abney Black, Artis Hallum and Ida Perkins Hallum; and uncles and aunts, David “Dixie” Hallum, Clayton Hallum, Wesley Black, Homer Black, Audrey Hearell, Ethel Walden, Virginia Black and Evelyn Proffer.

Pallbearers were Kelly Shaffer, Ted Furrh, Pete King, Greg Hallum, Ronald Hallum, Ronald Rhoades, Rusty Smith and Ray Wingfield. Honorary pallbearers were Dr. James Carlson, Virgil Fisher, Arthur Rickets, Dick Chance, Will Musser, C.W. Hallum, Randy Hicks, Trae Gray, Thomas Cox and Doc Jones.
