James Monroe Walker

At the lower center of this photo is the fallen stone of Mandy J. Walker, the wife of James Monroe Walker. You see the three other grave markers nearby....a white rock, a round flat stone and a piece of slate. Is one of these what marked the grave of James M. Walker? We don't know but if he is buried here with Mandy, then he would be buried in this general area.

BIO:

Birth: Jul. 10, 1848 Texas, USA Death: Nov. 8, 1904 Love County Oklahoma, USA

H/O Amanda J. (Butler).

S/O Hubbard Peyton Walker and Elizabeth (Leake).

Children of James and Mandy Walker: Laura Frances Walker - William Thomas Walker - Mary Ellen Walker - Joseph Abb Walker - Minnie Annas Walker - Martha Ann Walker - James Marion Walker - Myrtle Mae Walker - Clem Clyde Walker.

1900 Census record reflects after Mandy died in Indian Territory in 1895, James M. Walker returned to Texas. However, according to family legend he returned to Indian Territory where he died on November 8, 1904 and is buried.

While we have no documented proof of his burial in the Gordon Cemetery, various ones of his children continued to live in the Marsden, Pickens Co., Chickasaw Nation, Indian Territory area in the period between 1903-1911 giving the possibility that he most likely had returned to that area of Indian Territory when he died. There is one rock next to the base of his wife's tombstone which could be a possible marker for his grave if he was buried with her.

Earlier surveys of the cemetery show "J. M. Walker" on them but dates are similar to his wife's dates as to his...but not exact for either. Earlier researchers may have found a readable stone...we've not found a stone.
