Services for George Van Burkhart, 92, of Marietta, were held at 10 a.m., Tuesday, December 14 in Marietta’s First Baptist Church with Rev. Jim Pena officiating.
Interment followed in the Eastman Cemetery.
Born February 17, 1918 at Bomar, the son of Love County pioneers, E.I. and Ellie Gordon Burkhart, he died Friday, December 10, 2010 at his residence.
Mr. Burkhart married the former Anna Lee Sanders at Bomar on December 3, 1939. He served with the Navy Seabees in Guam during World War II. In 1948 the couple moved to west Texas to make their home, returning to Love County in 1976. Mr. Burkhart was an operator for Shell Oil Company Refinery and retired after 26 years. During his employment with Shell they lived in Odessa, Texas and Chillicothe, Texas. He was a member of the American Legion and VFW, Past Commander of McGee Henry American Legion Post #302 in Chillicothe, Past Member of the Chillicothe Masonic Lodge #876, Charter Member of the Scottish Rite Consistory in Lubbock, Texas, Noble of the Mystic Shrine, Maskat Temple in Wichita Falls, Texas and an Honorary Member of Khiva Shrine Temple in Amarillo, Texas. Since his retirement and returning to Love County, Mr. Burkhart enjoyed being a farmer, rancher and carpenter and being involved in the community. He served six years on the Big Five Board, also on the Love County Election Board, and in his later years serviced many Love County residents by doing yard maintenance. As recognition of their service to the community, George and Anna Lee were honored as the 1992 Love County Frontier Days Pioneer King and Queen. Mr. Burkhart joined the Baptist Church at an early age, and at present was a member of Marietta’s First Baptist Church where he was lovingly called Old Man Burkhart by Pastor Tommy. He was also affectionately known as Grandpa by friends of Jeff, Kim and Lisa, the grandchildren he raised in Marietta. Mr. Burkhart was of Cherokee Indian ancestry.
Preceding him in death were two daughters, Karen Jen in 1949 and Elizabeth Ann in 2007; his parents; and all of his brothers and sisters.
He is survived by his wife, Anna Lee Burkhart of the home; three sons and daughters-in-law, Gary V. and Paulette Burkhart and Rick Burkhart, all of Marietta, and John and Susan Burkhart of Kemp, Texas; a daughter, Vanda Harvey of Allen, Texas; adopted daughter, Sue Berry, also of Allen; eight grandchildren, Jeff Harvey, Kim Short, Lisa Gipson, Gina Cowen, G.V. Burkhart, Jr., Christy Coker, Merrick Burkhart and Jane Burkhart; 21 great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild.
Pallbearers were Jeff Harvey, Dewayne Gipson, Terry Cooke, Merrick Burkhart, G.V. Burkhart, Jr. and Noah Evans. Honorary bearers were Bob Burkhart, John Burkhart, Riley Burkhart, Jesse Kirk, Vonder Burkhart, Shelton Burkhart, Milas Alagood, Rex White and Harold White.

Services for Anna Lee Burkhart, 98, of Marietta will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, July 5 in the First Baptist Church, Marietta, with Lawrence Anderson and Rick Burkhart officiating.
Interment will follow in the Eastman Cemetery located in the Eastman Community.
Born August 19, 1920 in Eastman to Dora Souse (original Chickasaw enrollee) and Henry C. Sanders, she died Saturday, June 30, 2019 at Mercy Health Love County.
She married George Van Burkhart of Shady Dale on December 3, 1939 and celebrated 71 years of marriage prior to his death on December 10, 2010.
She was preceded in death by George; children, Elizabeth Ann Cooke and Karen Jean Burkhart; her parents; brothers, Henry Sanders and John Sanders; grandchildren, Gary Vance Burkhart, Jr. and Merrick Glen Burkhart; and daughter-in-law, Charlotte Burkhart.
Survivors include her children, Vanda Lee Harvey of Allen, Texas, Gary Vance Burkhart and wife Paulette of Marietta, Ricky Glen Burkhart of Marietta, and John Wylie Burkhart and wife Susan of Kemp, Texas; and adopted daughter, Sue Berry of Allen, Texas; grandchildren, Jeff Harvey, Kimberly Ann Harvey Short, Lisa Gaye Hughes Gipson, Gina Burkhart Cowen, Christy Burkhart Coker, Amy Grantham Darnell and Jane Burkhart; 18 great-grandchildren; 15 great-great-grandchildren; sisters, Betty Tipton of Altus, Bobbie Epley of Wilson and Mary Buckley of Norman; and a brother, Eddie Sanders of Oklahoma City.
Prior to returning to Marietta after Anna and George retired, she worked for Dr. Wade Nichols at the Chillicothe Texas Hospital. Anna and George became immediately involved in the community and were recognized for their commitment to the county by serving as Pioneer King and Queen in June 1992. Anna was also named Love County Citizen of the Year in 1997. She served 24 years as an election official and as precinct election inspector, 10 years with the Historical Society serving as vice president, 17 years with the Love County Fair Board, serving 13 years as the treasurer, and 25 years with the Busy Bee Group. Along with county organizations she was a 73-year member of the Home Demonstration Club now known as Oklahoma Extension Homemakers Council. She served as president and held many other offices. Her many accomplishments include 1983 and 1990 Love County Homemaker of they Year, 1983 Love County Extension Homemaker of the Year, 1999 Love County Outstanding FCE Family of the Year and 2004 Oklahoma Home Community Education Member of the Year. Anna was a multiple winner with her baking at the county fairs and state fairs in the food category, as well as in the quilting and crocheting categories. Anna was extremely proud of her Chickasaw heritage and promoted Chickasaw programs in all her endeavors.
Serving as pallbearers will be Jeff Harvey, Christopher Harvey, Dewayne Gipson, Terry Cooke, Terry Birks, Holden Short, Brandon Short, Braden Burkhart, Harley Hayes, Kim Short and Lisa Gipson. Honorary bearers will be Bob Burkhart, John Burkhart, Shelton Burkhart and Vonder Burkhart.
