A celebration of the homegoing of Verda Lee Anderson Toles, 95, of Marietta will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, November 15 in the St. John Primitive Baptist Church, Burneyville, with Elder Willie McGaskey officiating.

Interment will follow in the Dunbar Cemetery.

Born June 22, 1919, the youngest child of Lucy and Will Anderson, she died Saturday, November 8, 2014 in Mercy Health Love County, Marietta.

Verda lived in the Dunbar community all of her life, attending Dunbar School and later high school in Ardmore. She married J.E. Toles on March 30, 1940 at Burneyville and devoted her life to making a home for their family that included five children – Marian Joyce, Willia Mae, Vernita, Cathy Nell, and James Jr.

Although Verda’s primary responsibility was taking care of her home and children, she worked at various jobs including Lake Murray Lodge and Marietta Sportswear. She loved to cook and work in her vegetable garden, as well as sew clothes and quilts.


She was a member of St. John Primitive Baptist Church in Burneyville where she served as clerk for many years. She also enjoyed cooking delicious meals for the church pastor and members every month. Nothing gave her more joy than baking her special pies and cakes and sharing them with anyone who came to visit. She was always looking for a new recipe to try.


She was preceded in death by her husband, J.E. on October 17, 1983; her parents; three brothers; three sisters and two daughters, Vernita and Marian Joyce.


She leaves to mourn her passing, daughters Willia Mae Williams (Glen) and Cathy Toles (Rick) and her son James Jr.; grandchildren, Sharon Renee, Paul, Shawntay, Kimberly (James), Pamela, Michael, Keith (Terry), and Darrin (Carla); 13 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews, as well as many friends and acquaintances in the community.


The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. on Friday, November 14 at the funeral home.
