Lovetta was a strong woman of phenomenal grace and dignity. The Celebration was held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, December 27 at New Zion Missionary Baptist Church, Marietta.
Her final resting place was in the Dunbar Cemetery.
Lovetta led an exemplary life of strength and courage until deteriorating health impeded her abilities. A lifetime resident of Love County, she was born in the Ran Community. She and her twin brother, LaBraska, were born April 28, 1941. Though he died at birth, her soul took flight from their home Wednesday, December 20, 2017 at the age of 76 years, seven months and 22 days. She and LaBraska were the fifth and sixth of 10 children born to Bessie and William Halstied. This woman, who was definitely second to none, attended school at Marietta’s Douglass. When 16, she and Lewis Douglass were blissfully wed, a marriage that lasted more than 60 years. Four children were born to this union. She received her diploma by completing General Education Development courses. She began employment at Love County’s Health Department in 1971 and retired 30 years later. Prior to this position, she was a housewife and a homemaker. She accepted Christ as Lord and Savior when 14. A very vital connection with the New Zion Baptist Church, she fulfilled numerous capacities until she became an Alzheimer’s victim years ago. She possessed many gifts and talents, one being the Culinary Arts department. Their home reeked with the aroma of good foods.
Other than her twin brother, Lovetta is preceded in death by her parents; a granddaughter, Courtney Nichole Purvey; sister, Lorene Foreman; brother, Jimmie McCarroll; and a daughter-in-law, Eva Douglass.
Lovetta leaves to forever cherish precious memories her devoted husband; four children and their spouses, Lester and Kim Douglass, Sheila and Delbert Hamilton, Keith Douglass, and Deirdre Douglass; five grandchildren, Montre (Kristi) Douglass, Shatrece Douglass, Donovan Purvey, Kylan Douglass, and Quaneisha (Jorge) Rodriquez; six great-grandchildren; three brothers, Herculee McCarroll, Perry (Rebecca) Halstied, and Hayze Halstied; three sisters, Dorothy (L.J.) Lornes, Etta Halstied, and Willie (Jobie) Kirk; nieces and nephews; sister-in-law, Hattie McCarroll; brother-in-law, Ray Douglas; and countless cousins and friends.
Honorary bearers were Arian Douglass, Tory Douglass, LaBraska Washington, Marquis Foreman, Cecil Douglass and Bobby Anderson. Active bearers were Milton Dailey, Richard McCarroll, Kevin Halstied, Frank Lornes, KorDale Lornes, and Willie Anderson. Bearers of flowers were Karen Vick, Latosha Lornes, Latronda Lornes, Diana Halstied, Succentto Hennesy, Lisa Anderson, and CaSaundra Foreman.
