Charles Dwayne Lain passed away Monday, March 15, 2021 in Marietta at
the age of 86.
Charles was born on February 22, 1935 in the Washita
River bottom west of Davis, Oklahoma. He married Virgie (Christine)
Walker in September of 1962 at the Lake Murray Chapel. Charles and
Christine had three sons, Raymond Lain of Ardmore, Oklahoma, Charles Ed
Lain of Ardmore, Oklahoma, and Rodney Lain of Burneyville, Oklahoma, and
two daughters, Cathy (Lain) Arthur of Dickson, Oklahoma, and Ramona
(Lain) Duke of Saint Jo, Texas.
Growing up, Charles attended Rocky, Oklahoma schools where he was active
in 4-H, FFA, baseball and basketball. In 1950 Charles was on the
first-string basketball team, coached by Red Miller, that won the state
championship. In 1951 he had the Grand Champion Steer at the Kansas City
Royal Livestock Show and had the Champion Hereford Steer at the Denver
Western Livestock Show that same year. Charles also helped his dad in
the development and creation of a new brand of wheat called "Concho".
This was coordinated through Oklahoma A&M College, and Charles helped
his dad become the Oklahoma Wheat Grower for 1951. In 1952 his family
moved to Beca County, Colorado, where all four boys helped their dad
farming and ranching five sections of land. He also enlisted in the Army
during the Korean War era from 1950 to 1953.
The following fall, Charles enrolled at Panhandle A&M College at
Goodwell, Oklahoma and attended college there for two years. In 1955 he
moved with his family to help manage the Guy Harris Ranch located about
one mile south of Springer, Oklahoma. He worked as a route man for the
Dr. Pepper Company out of Ardmore, Oklahoma, and worked as a route man
for the Jewel Tea Company. He also sold life insurance for an Oklahoma
City firm. After he and Christine married, Charles worked with his
father, Charles H. Lain, at the Lain's Feed & Seed Store in Marietta,
Oklahoma. He later became the Owner and Manager of that business. The
Lains purchased 40 acres in the Burneyville, Oklahoma area and finished
raising their children. Charles worked for Miller Trucker and Western
Flyer Trucking as a long-haul driver. He drove millions of miles for
those companies before retiring because of bad health. He was so greatly
appreciated by these companies for his skills that he received a new
truck about every two years.
