Steven Chase Greenwood was born February 9, 1999, in Fort Worth, Texas, and departed this life unexpectedly, and much too soon, in Hayes, Kansas, on August 26, 2018, at the age of 19.

Chase was a smart and entertaining young man, who during his upper elementary and junior high years at Sulphur Schools, participated in Mrs. Keena’s numerous musicals, played baseball, football, basketball, and wrestling. Chase enrolled as a freshman in Turner High School, so that he could play baseball twice a year for Coach Hartman. It was his favorite sport, and his love of the game was rivaled only by his loyalty to his teammates. By the end of his senior year, he was a leader on the team both on and off the field. Throughout his high school years, he served as a class officer, FFA officer, and lettered in basketball and baseball. Chase was also actively involved in FFA, showing hogs, and loved his Ag Mechanic classes with Mr. McNeil, where he enjoyed welding and shop work. During high school, he worked at the Lake Murray Riding Stables as a wrangler and trail guide where he would entertain guests with his humor and charm. He served on the Jimtown Volunteer Fire Department and was a member of the Burneyville Baptist Church. He was recently employed by Phoenix, as water transfer, in Sheridan, Wyoming. Chase loved music, hunting and fishing, coin collecting and the rodeo. He was a kind-hearted, silly, sweet and sometimes ornery young man, who thrilled in being the one to keep his friends laughing. He was known to put a smile on the face of all who knew him, loved by everyone, and will be sorely missed by those privileged enough to know him.

Chase is survived by his parents, Amber and David Cain of Burneyville and Patrick Greenwood of Sanger, Texas; two brothers, his twin, Cole Greenwood and Connor Cain of the home; grandparents, John and Marjorie Greenwood, Steven Hicks, and Sam and Debby Cain, all of Marietta, and Debra and Jerry Balch of Burneyville; great-grandfather, JC Awtrey of Ringling; numerous aunts, uncles and cousins; and the person who brought him such great happiness, his love, Hannah Gilbreath.

Family visitation will be Thursday, August 30 from 6 until 8 p.m. at the Flanagan-Watts Funeral Home in Marietta.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, August 31 in Freeman Auditorium of Turner Schools with Shane Wolfe officiating, assisted by Les Scheer.

Interment will follow in Burneyville Cemetery.

Serving as casket bearers will be Brant Wolfe, Jeremy Willis, Chase Kelley, Rhett Hemingway, Hoss Tadlock, and Chance Lunsford. Honorary bearers are Jesse Dominguez, Joey Boatner, Tyler Bates, and the 2017-2018 Turner Falcons baseball team.

The family has requested donations in Chase’s memory be made to Turner Falcons Baseball and sent to the Turner Superintendent’s Office, P.O. Box 159, Burneyville, OK 73430.

Man killed in Kansas accident

On Sunday, August 26, Steven Chase Greenwood, 19, of Burneyville was killed in an auto accident on Interstate 70 near Russell, Kansas. The accident occurred at 2:54 p.m.

Greenwood was driving a 2005 GMC pickup truck east on I-70 about seven miles west of the Kansas Highway 281 junction when for an unknown reason, he entered the south ditch and collided with the guardrail. His vehicle flipped over the guardrail and rolled several times, coming to rest with the wheels facing southwest.

“Based on the slow veer off the highway, it appears the driver fell asleep,” said Kansas State Trooper Tod Helman, “although we can’t be absolutely sure because the passengers were asleep.”

Greenwood and his passengers had worked all day long Saturday and were headed home from Sheridan, Wyoming where they had been working.

Greenwood, who was not wearing a seat belt, was transported to Hays Medical Center, where he later died.

Passengers in the vehicle were Jesse D. Dominguez, 23, of Marietta; Tyler L. Bates, 22, of Ardmore; and Joseph A. Boatner, 22, of Marietta. All three were transported to Hays Medical Center, where they were treated and released.

Dominguez and Bates were wearing safety belts, but Boatner was not.
