Services for Andrew Jackson “Andy” Fitts, 78, were Monday at 2:00 p.m. in the Eastman Baptist Church with Rev. Mike Shaw, pastor, officiating, assisted by his son, Mike Fitts.

Born October 6, 1916, at Burneyville, Mr. Fitts died November 25, 1994, in the Ardmore hospital at the age of 78. He was the son of George W. and Tillie Mae Brown Fitts.

A descendant of pioneers who settled and helped develop Burneyville, Mr. Fitts attended Burneyville School, graduating from Burneyville High School in 1936. During WWII, he was inducted into the U.S. Army on January 7, 1942, and assigned to Company I, 126th Infantry fighting in the Battle of Buna, New Guinea. As a result of this excursion, Mr. Fitts was infected with malaria and medically discharged on November 16, 1943, from O’Reilly General Hospital in Springfield, Missouri. He returned to his hometown of Burneyville where he resumed farming and ranching and was employed by Waco Turner during the years he operated the lodge, now known as Falconhead.

Mr. Fitts married the former Irby A. Monkres on December 26, 1962, at Denton, Texas, and they continued to live at Burneyville.

He is survived by his wife, Irby A. Monkres Fitts of the home at Burneyville; a son, Mike Fitts of Rush Springs; two daughters and son-in-law, Gail Wooldridge Smith of Dallas, Texas, and Joy Lynn and Ron Alexander of Wilson; a sister, Frances Cude of Norwalk, California; and a grandson, Ronald D. Alexander II of Wilson.

Mr. Fitts was preceded in death by his father in 1972; his mother in 1976; a sister, Ruth Fry; and a brother, William S. “Shake” Fitts.

Services were directed by Alexander Funeral Home, Wilson, with interment in the Burneyville Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Gene Monkres, Pierce Monkres, Don Warthen, J.C. Montgomery, Lanny Sliger, Pat Parker, Robert Williams and Ott Ladner. Honorary bearers included Cecil Idell, Bill Looney, Bill Riley, Charlie Barrick, Taylor Goldsmith, Rex Harrill and Mutt Hays.
