R. B. Welch
Funeral services for R.B. Welch will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 5, 1999, at the First National Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Summit View Cemetery under the direction of Pollard Funeral Home.
R. B. was born in Montrose, Ark., May 31, 1910, to R. B. Welch Sr. and Annie Mae Welch, the second of three children.
While he was pre-school age, his family moved to Hillsboro, Texas, where he attended the public schools, graduating from Peabody High School. During this time, he joined Mt. Moriah Baptist Church, and on returning to Hillsboro after finishing college to teach and coach athletics, he served as Superintendent of the Sunday School. He joined the First National Baptist Church in Guthrie after his retirement in West Virginia.
R. B. earned the B.S. degree in business administration from Langston University and the M.B.A. degree from Northwestern University. For 39 years he served as a fiscal officer in institutions of higher learning, 20 years at Langston University and 19 years at West Virginia State College.
He has many professional affiliations including the National Association of College and University Business Officers, Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Sigma Pi Phi Fraternity and the NAACP.
He was cited by Langston University as a Distinguished Alumnus in 1988 and was a life member of the Langston University Alumni Association. Always concerned with helping young people, he set up endowed scholarships at both Langston University and West Virginia State College.
He departed this life Monday afternoon, Nov. 1, 1999. He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings. Left to cherish his memory are his devoted wife, Elwyn, step-sons Inman Breaux and Dr. Barry Breaux, nieces Melvadeen Bailey and Wynelle Welch, nephews James, Reginald and Robert Welch, sister-in-law Ruth Swain and other relatives and many friends.
