James Paxton Towle

Died: July 29, 2015

James Paxton Towle went home to his Heavenly Father on July 29, 2015, at the age of 81. James was born on June 14, 1934, in Guthrie, OK, to Everett Granville and Alta Lavana (Murphy) Towle.

A lifetime resident of Guthrie, James graduated from Guthrie High School in the spring of 1953. That fall, on October 10, 1953, James married his sweetheart, Maxine (Preston) Towle of Guthrie; this fall they would have celebrated their 62nd anniversary. In 1956, James went to work for OG&E, retiring in 1994. He enjoyed his time as a lifelong farmer, raising wheat and cattle. Throughout his life, James participated in a variety of community activities, serving in such roles as: Deacon of First Southern Baptist Church, Member and past Master of Guthrie Masonic Lodge #35, KCCH of Guthrie Scottish Rite, Member of Guthrie Chapter #12 of the Order of the Eastern Star, and past Grand Escort for the 2007 “Heart and Soul” for the Oklahoma Grand Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star. James enjoyed his happiest moments in life while surrounded by the company of his wife, children, and grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Phyllis Ann (infant) and Viola Gunkel, and brother, Everett, Jr. (infant). He is survived by his wife, Maxine; children, Jim Towle (Evelyn) of Oklahoma City, Sheryl Miles (Don) of Guthrie, and Gaylan Towle (Marcia) of Edmond; grandchildren, Shannon Martin (Jim) of Edmond, Jamie Winters (JJ) of Mustang, Michael Miles (Courtney) of Edmond, Derek Miles of Guthrie,Gaylan Towle II (Leslie) of Oklahoma City, and Brooke Towle of Edmond; great-grandchildren, Logan and Jace Martin, and Teagan and Kinley Winters; sisters, Norma Jeanne Shipman (Merle) and Darlene Dawson (Sammie), of Guthrie; and numerous nieces and nephews.

His family would like to offer their deepest appreciation for the work and compassion of James’s physicians and nurses with Mercy Health in Guthrie and Oklahoma City.

Visitation for James will be held Sunday, August 2, at Smith-Gallo Funeral Home, 220 North First Street, Guthrie, Oklahoma 73044, from 2:00 to 8:00 p.m.

Services will be held Monday, August 3, at 2:00 p.m. at First Southern Baptist Church, 202 E. Noble Ave., Guthrie, OK 73044, with interment to follow at Summit View Cemetery in Guthrie. Services are under the direction of Smith-Gallo Funeral Home, Guthrie.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Gideons International, PO Box 54, Guthrie, OK 73044, for the purchase of Bibles in memory of James.
