Bette Ellen (Nichols) Smith, age 88, of Oklahoma City, OK left this earth to join the Lord in Heaven on May 13, 2009, after suffering a broken hip in February.
Bette Ellen, known as B.E. to her friends and family, was born on June 9, 1920 in Guthrie, Oklahoma. Her parents were Victor and Betty Nichols. B.E. was a pioneer for women. She attended Benedictine Sisters Catholic College in the 1940s and was a career newspaper journalist. Bette Ellen started her career at the Guthrie Daily Leader and joined the Monroe News Star in 1959 as the Society Editor where she worked alongside her husband of 40 years, Norman Smith until his death in 1979. In 1980, B.E. returned to north Oklahoma City where she became a dedicated member of Grace United Methodist Church, was active in PEO and volunteered for Meals On Wheels, also volunteering at Deaconess Hospital and Will Rogers Airport. Bette Ellen was a great friend and aunt. She was sophisticated, could always make you laugh with her funny, sometimes off-color, stories and had a great love for the Dallas Cowboys, Barry Switzer and Ronald Reagan. She will be missed very much by everyone who knew and loved her.
She is preceded in death by her sisters Margaret Kennedy-Waintroob and Vickie Cook. Survivors include her nieces & nephews: Paul & Sandra McConnell, Dennis Kennedy, Lea Parmeter, Joe & Patricia “Mike” Bieger, and Mike & Teresa London. She is also survived by 10 great nieces and nephews and 30 great-great nieces and nephews along with two great-great-great nephews.
Services will be held 2:00 PM, Friday, May 15, 2009 at the Smith Memorial Chapel, Guthrie with Reverend Ed Light officiating. Burial will follow at Summit View Cemetery in Guthrie. Services are under the direction of Smith-Gallo Funeral Home, Guthrie.
