Died: October 20, 2011
Virginia Maria Shreffler was born on July 30, 1954 in Guthrie, OK to Kenneth and Hazel McEwen. She passed away October 20, 2011 in Oklahoma City, OK after an illness of several months.
Virginia grew up and attended elementary school in Meridian, OK. She graduated high school in Coyle, OK in 1972. She married David Shreffler on June 10, 1972, and David’s U.S. Army service took him to Vietnam a few days after they got married. Upon his return from Vietnam, David and Virginia lived in Gainesville, VA until his discharge from the Army. Following several years in Texas, they returned to Guthrie in 1979 where they raised their sons, Jeremy and Cory.
Virginia was happy that they were able to build their home on land homesteaded by her great-grandfather, Alpheus Goodrich, in the 89er Land Run. She was a devoted mother to her children and loved animals as well; she adopted many stray animals over the past 20 years as she could not bear to turn away an animal in need.
Virginia is survived by her husband, David, of the home; sons Jeremy Shreffler and wife Karina of Tulsa, OK and Cory Shreffler of Meridian. Also surviving are two precious grandchildren, Clara and Adam Shreffler of Tulsa; her parents, Kenneth and Hazel McEwen of Guthrie; her brother Richard McEwen and wife Alice of Perry, OK: nephew Jacob McEwen of Stillwater, OK; uncles David Goodrich of Guthrie and Floyd Goodrich and wife Marvel of Noble, OK. She has two cousins, Brenda Nivens and Marlene Stangl. She also leaves a brother-in-law, Lawrence Shreffler, Jr. of Ohio; sisters-in-law Marlene Koenig of Ohio, Karen Norris, and Cheryl Short of Guthrie.
She was preceded in death by her little brother Bruce McEwen; her grandparents Cleo and Clarice McEwen and Roger and Elsie Goodrich; father-in-law and mother-in-law Lawrence and Oricedell Shreffler; and aunt Marilyn Goodrich.
Virginia was baptized into Christ at the Guthrie Church of Christ as a teenager. Her favorite time was when her grandchildren from Tulsa visited. She also loved her three dogs and cats, and crossword puzzles.
Services will be held Saturday, October 22, 2011 at 10:00 am at Smith Memorial Chapel with Reverend Lawrence Shreffler, Jr., officiating. Internment will follow at Summit View Cemetery. Services are under the direction of Smith-Gallo Funeral Home, Guthrie.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to FOGAS (Friends of the Guthrie Animal Shelter), P.O. Box 1557, Guthrie, OK 73044.
