Funeral services for Willard C. Scurlock, 96, of Guthrie will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, July 14, 2003 at Community Baptist Church in Guthrie with the Rev. Jim Hylton officiating. Interment will follow in Summit View Cemetery under the direction of Smith Funeral Home in Guthrie.
Scurlock was born March 29, 1907 on a farm seven miles out of Odell, Texas to John C. and Molly Scurlock. He passed away July 9, 2003, age 96 years, 3 months and 11 days.
Willard married Marguerite Greenlee in 1928 before coming to Guthrie in 1932. He began his association with Oklahoma Tire and Supply Company in 1933 and was awarded the distinction of being Otasco Associate Dealer of the Year in 1961.
A longtime civic leader in Guthrie, he served two terms as Mayor, from 1951 to 1955. Active in the Chamber of Commerce, he served as president of the Retail Merchants Association, board member for Community Chest and Logan County Red Cross and longtime director and chairman of the board for the Guthrie Savings and Loan Association. He was a member of the Guthrie Lions Club for over 60 years, serving as president and attending the International Lions Convention in Havana, Cuba. Scurlock was a 50-year member of the Guthrie Scottish Rite, being a 32nd-degree Mason, and was the longtime chairman of the loan committee as well as a past president of the Guthrie Service Knights organization. He was also a 75-year member of Guthrie Lodge No. 35, as well as being a 50-year member of the Guthrie York Rite Bodies. He was a member of the Community Baptist Church, where he served on the Stewardship Committee. Scurlock enjoyed fishing in the Gulf with his wife, as well as traveling when he had the time.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Marguerite in 1992, and his son Leon G. Scurlock, also that same year.
Survivors include one sister, Minnie Mae Smith Stone of Upland, Calif; two nephews, Yale Scurlock of Oklahoma City and Jerry Smith of Napa, Calif.; three nieces, Linda K. Marshall of Pixley, Calif., Jackie Bunnell of Seal Beach, Calif. and Molly Scorsatta and husband Al of Upland, Calif.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Cottonwood Clinic of Guthrie or to Community Baptist Church.
No public visitation will be held. The casket will be opened after the services.
