Graveside funeral services for Velma Jean (Yates) Scannell, 80, of Guthrie, OK will be held at 10:00 am Tuesday, April 26, 2011 at Summit View Cemetery in Guthrie. Services are under the direction of Smith-Gallo Funeral Home, Guthrie.
Velma Jean the daughter of James Harley and Velma Ruth (Ferrell) Yates was born October 4, 1930 on a farm across the road from the Lazy E, and she passed away on Thursday, April 21, 2011 in Guthrie. Velma Jean graduated the 8th grade from the Meridian School and Graduated from the Guthrie High School in 1948.
Velma Jean Married John W. Scannell on March 13, 1948. They had two children, a daughter Marie and a son John Jr. The family lived on a farm east of Guthrie and they were members of the West Guthrie Methodist Church for many years.
Velma Jean was active in the Prairie Grove Home Demonstration Club, served as 4-H Club parent sponsor, raised a big garden every summer, and retired in 1993 after 27 years as a cook with the Guthrie School District. She and her husband were members of the Grace Covenant Church family.
Velma Jean was preceded in death by John Scannell, her husband of 60 years. She is mourned by one daughter, Marie Smith of El Segundo, California; one son, John W. Scannell of Guthrie; one brother, James Yates of Edmond; four grandchildren, Michael Smith, Steven Smith, Kaye Shuffield, and John W. Scannell, III; three great-grandchildren, Elizabeth Shuffield, Trenton Scannell, and Nathen Scannell; and many friends and family members.
Velma Jean’s sense of humor and distinctive laugh will be missed by many.
Visitation For friends and family will be held Monday, April 25, 2011, 11:00 am until 8:00 pm at Smith-Gallo Funeral Home.
