Willise "Gene" Eugene Reed
Willise Eugene "Gene" Reed, 91, was born March 10, 1926 in Canton, OK, to Ira Alfred and Clara (Bain) Reed. He passed away May 8, 2017 at Golden Age Nursing Home in Guthrie, OK.
Gene retired from ONG as assistant manager in Guthrie after 32 years. He was active in the Lions Club and a member of the American Legion Post #58 for 60 years. He was a born again Christian, active in church for many years. Gene loved fishing, coaching little league basketball, hunting, bowling, and card games.
He served in the US Navy during World War II from 1944 – 1946. Gene served on the USS Sierra (AD18), the USS Ocelot (IX110), and the USS Clemente (AG79). Commendations he earned were the World War II Victory Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal and the Philippine Liberation Campaign Ribbon.
Survivors include his wife of 73 years, Lela (Lorenz) Reed; children, Larry Reed (Marcia) of Choctaw, OK and Sharron Hall (Douglas) of Guthrie; 4 grandchildren, Scott Hirzel (Kristi), Jason Hirzel (Kelly), Lisa Reed (Stephen), and Matthew Reed (Gretchen); 12 great-grandchildren, Maci, Garrett, and Maggie Hirzel, Hayden, Landen, Kellen, and Heston Hirzel, Miller and Lela Smith and Jayden, Cooper, and Levi Reed. Also surviving is his brother, Harold (Linda) Reed, along with many nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents; an infant grandson, Chad Hirzel; half-siblings, Ralph, Fred, Clarice, and Jessie; brothers, Alfred, Bill, and Marcus; and sisters, Thelma and Martha.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M., Wednesday, May 10, 2017 at Smith Memorial Chapel with Chaplain Gene Owen officiating. Interment will follow at Summit View Cemetery. Services are under the direction of Smith-Gallo Funeral Home.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, 2:30 P.M. – 8:00 P.M.
In lieu of flowers, memorials in his name may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, Oklahoma and Arkansas Chapter, Inc., 2448 East 81st St., Suite 3000, Tulsa, OK 74137.
