Herbert Lee Poe

Born: October 29, 1920
Died: February 11, 2011

Herbert Lee Poe was born October 29, 1920 and went to be with our Lord on February 11, 2011 at age 90.

Herbert is preceded in death by his parents Elbert & Sarah Poe, son Herbert Gale Poe, and wife Charlotte Laverne Poe.

Herbert was raised in Wynnewood, OK, where he graduated high school and then joined the United States Coast Guard, serving in WW II from October 23, 1942 thru October 29, 1945. After serving in the Coast Guard he moved back to Oklahoma where he began his career working for OG&E and then marrying Charlotte Laverne Wages on December 7, 1948. They made their home in Guthrie, OK in 1954 where Herbert continued to work for OG&E until he retired 1985. Herbert & Laverne celebrated 61 years of marriage before Laverne went to be with our Lord in 2009.

Herbert was a member of Albert Pike Lodge, No.162 of Guthrie. After retiring Herbert enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and traveling.

Herbert is survived by his son Stephen B. Poe and wife Jan of Guthrie, daughter Phyllis Williams and husband Charlie of Oklahoma City, OK, grandchildren Stephen Poe, Sarah Poe, Mike Williams, Greg Williams, Marla Woodard, Chad Poe, and Shanna Poe, and numerous great-grandchildren.

Herbert spent the past 2 years living at Ash Street Assisted Living where he enjoyed the company of numerous new friends.

He will be greatly missed by family and friends that loved and knew him.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, February 17, 2011 at Smith Memorial Chapel with Pastor David Nolen of the First Southern Baptist Church officiating. Burial will follow at Summit View Cemetery in Guthrie. Services are under the direction of Smith-Gallo Funeral Home, Guthrie.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, 12:00 p.m. -8:00 p.m. and Thursday, 9:00 a.m. -1:45 p.m. The casket will not be opened after the service.
