Funeral services for Malcolm Phillips, 91, of Guthrie, OK, will be held at 10:00 AM, Wednesday, June 24, 2015 at Smith Memorial Chapel with Chaplain Gene Owen officiating. Interment will be held at Summit View Cemetery. Services are under the direction of Smith-Gallo Funeral Home, Guthrie.
Malcolm was born November 10, 1923 in Garber, Oklahoma, into a family of 10 children. He passed away Thursday, June 18, 2015, in Guthrie.
He entered World War II in 1943. After fighting in the Philippines (the 25th Infantry Division on Luzon) and being in a fox hole for many days, he earned a Purple Heart Medal when a hand grenade blew up in his hand.
After the War, he worked at Tinker Air Force Base in Oklahoma City. In 1957, Malcolm moved to Denver from Guthrie to work for Glen L. Martin’s now Lockheed Martin’s. He was a Metallurgical Engineer for them and helped build the Titan missile (a defender of our land). He did all the testing of all the metals for the Titan Missile and has his name on the original Titan sent into space.
Malcolm was an expert wood restorer and builder of furniture.
He was preceded in death by his beautiful wife, Eloise Josephine Phillips and his beautiful youngest daughter, Linda Maxine Phillips Boyett.
In death, he leaves his oldest daughter, Sharon Phillips White and 4 grandchildren: Kenneth Edward Boyett, Michael Scott Carpenter, Chad Andrew Carpenter, and Shelley Ann (Boyett) Skinner. Malcolm is also survived by 6 great-grandchildren: Daniel Owen Skinner, John Allan Skinner, Olivia Ann Carpenter, Madison Lynne Boyett, Austin Michael Carpenter, and Hayden Edward Boyett as well as one great-great-grandchild, Daniel Owen Skinner, II. He is also survived by his sister, Margaret Phillips Cook of Louisiana.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, 12:00 PM - 8:00 PM.
