Vernon Preston Payne

Born: December 08, 1935
Died: January 26, 2009

Vernon Payne, 73, went home January 26, 2009. He was born December 8, 1935 in Guthrie, OK to Lavina and Vernie Payne. Vernon was a graduate of Guthrie High School in 1954. He met the love of his life and best friend, Nancy Shellhammer, in the fall of 1955 and were married December 15, 1956. Vernon worked in retail for many years, first at Kennemer Shoe Store, then at Jerry Payne’s Bootery. He also sold real estate until his retirement in 2005. He also worked as a bivocational music minister from which he never retired. Music was his gift and avenue for service. His music and his love for people allowed him to reach anyone, anywhere with the love of Christ. Vernon is preceded in death by his parents and brothers Ronnie and Nicky Payne. He is survived by his wife of 53 years Nancy of the home; two children Roger Payne and wife Tina of Springfield, MO and Carrie Cogburn and husband Barry of Guthrie; brother Jerry Payne and wife Sandy of Edmond, OK; sister-in-law Laura Payne of Guthrie; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and as his grandson put it, a TON of other family and friends. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, January 29, 2009 at Woodcrest Baptist Church. Interment will follow at Summit View Cemetery. Services are under the direction of Smith-Gallo Funeral Home, Guthrie. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Woodcrest Baptist Church for the purchase of new Baptist Hymnals. Mom said Dad would love it! Friends may call at Smith-Gallo Funeral Home on Wednesday until 8:00 p.m. and Thursday, 8:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. The casket will not be open after the service.
