Jewell Sykes Payne

Born: March 02, 1920
Died: August 06, 2010

Jewell Sykes Payne, 90, passed away on August 6, 2010. She was born on March 2, 1920 in Temple, OK to Earl A. and Flora B. Collins.

Jewell spent a number of years in the restaurant business, the grocery business and served as manager of Felt’s Shoe Store and Ashley’s Department Store in Guthrie, OK. Her hobbies included gardening, canning, and just visiting with anyone that may have crossed her path. She was the happiest when she was around her family, especially when she was preparing a homemade meal for them on special occasions. Her compassion, wit, and smile will be missed by all who knew her.

Jewell is preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Mae Marie Pinson; her husbands, John Dell Sykes and Marvin Payne; her daughter, Jeweletta Huddleston; her son Bobby Dell Sykes; and her grandson, Terry Moore.

She is survived by three children, Ann Boman of Guthrie, Clint Dickson and his wife Janet, of Guthrie, and Earl Sykes and his wife, Beverly of Guthrie; her son-in-law Steve Huddleston of Wellston, OK; her daughter-in-law Brenda Sykes of Guthrie; her grandchildren, Clint D. Dickson, Troy Guther, Tamara Copess, Billy Gray, Don Gray, Gay Lynn Nunez, Tracie Villegas, Bobby Sykes, Jr., Shannon Rodgers, Johnnie Sykes, Amy Ingle, Jillian Sykes, and Kyle Sykes; twenty-seven great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; and a host of other loved family and friends.

Services will be held Thursday, August 12, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. at Smith Memorial Chapel. Interment will follow at Summit View Cemetery. Services are under the direction of Smith-Gallo Funeral Home, Guthrie.

Visitation will be Wednesday until 8:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Jewell Sykes Payne Memorial Fund at the First United Methodist Church of Guthrie.
