Charles Scrutchfield Nelson

Charles Scrutchfield Nelson of Guthrie, Oklahoma, passed from this earth on August 22, 2012. He was born to Ora Scrutchfield and Edwin Todd Nelson on April 25, 1931 in Oklahoma City. His maternal grandparents were Charles Harvey and Luta Jane Scrutchfield, both of whom made the “Run of 89” into Guthrie on April 22, 1889.
Charles graduated as Valedictorian from Guthrie High School in 1949. He attended the University of Oklahoma, and graduated in 1953 with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree and in 1954 with a Master of Business Administration degree.
Upon graduation, he was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Air Force, serving two years at Holloman Air Force Base, New Mexico. Upon completion of his military tour he moved to Arlington, Texas, where from 1957 to 1959 he was Assistant Registrar for what is now the University of Texas at Arlington. In 1959 he became Registrar and Dean of Admissions and remained there until he returned to Guthrie in 1964.
In 1965 Charles was employed by the Sisters of St. Francis as Personnel Director at the Alverno Heights Hospital in Guthrie, and then served as Director of Administration until February, 1971.
In 1971 he was hired by the Guthrie Job Corps Center, holding several different titles until he became Deputy Director in 1988. In 1992 he became Consultant for the Job Corps Program for Wackenhut Services contractor. The following year he became the Center Director and retired from that position after 23 years with the program.
Charles was a Senior DeMolay of Trinity Chapter in Guthrie, a member and officer of Pi Kappa Alpha social fraternity at the University of Oklahoma, member of Guthrie Arts & Humanities Council, member and past board Chairman of the Logan County Chapter of American Red Cross, member and past President of the Guthrie Job Corps Community Relations Council and the Vocational Advisory Committee. In 1968 he was named Outstanding Jaycee in Guthrie. He served as a deacon for approximately five years and then as coordinator of the usher and greeter teams at the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) for over 20 years and as a member of the DeMolay Advisory Council for Trinity Chapter, Order of DeMolay for approximately 30 years. He was also a charter member of the Guthrie Kiwanis Club.
Active in Albert Pike #162 Masonic Lodge in Guthrie, Charles served as Worshipful Master in 1993 and as Secretary from 2001 to 2005. He was honored as a 50-year member of Albert Pike Lodge in 2004. In the Guthrie Scottish Rite he served as Venerable Master of the Lodge of Perfection in 2000 and became a 50-year member of Scottish Rite in 2006. For several years he served as one of the tour guides at the Scottish Rite Temple. He was knighted a KCCH in Scottish Rite and also received a Service Citation award.
A Memorial Service will be held at First Christian Church on Monday, August 27th at 10:30 a.m. with Dr. Dennis Clark officiating. Burial will be at Summit View Cemetery, Guthrie, in the Scrutchfield family plot. Services are under the direction of Smith-Gallo Funeral Home, Guthrie.
