Julius McElroy

Born: December 14, 1914
Died: December 16, 2010

Long time Guthrie, OK resident Julius McElroy just celebrated his 96th birthday with family. He passed away on December 16, 2010 in Edmond, OK. Julius was born in Guthrie on December 14, 1914 to Manous McElroy and Velma (Golson) McElroy.

Julius served in the United States Army during World War II and retired from Tinker Air Force Base after 28 years in aircraft maintenance. Julius farmed for over 60 years and was known as “the man behind the plow”. He touched many lives and had a big impact on everyone he met. He was blessed to live on this earth for 96 years. He will be remembered by his good deeds and being a dedicated husband, father, and grandfather.

Julius married his wife of 31 years, Montrosie Burns who passed away in 1979, had five children; Joyce, Julius Wendell, Geraldine, Berthell and Teresa. He was later married to Naomi Hathorn for 26 years. He was a member of Beebe Chapel Christian Methodist Episcopal and a former member of Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church, both of Guthrie.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Montrosie, siblings James and Opal, and his oldest son Julius Wendell McElroy.

He is survived by wife Naomi; daughters Joyce McElroy of Oklahoma City, OK, Geraldine Hawkins of Midwest City, OK, and Teresa Jones and husband James Jr. of Edmond; son Berthell McElroy of Oklahoma City; nine grandchildren; and ten great- grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, December 22, 2010 at Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church, 1320 E Vilas, Guthrie. Services are under the direction of Smith-Gallo Funeral Home, Guthrie. Interment will follow at Summit View Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday, 9:00 a.m. - 8:00 p.m.
