Harold O'thel McCallister

Born: January 07, 1920
Died: February 03, 2009

Harold O’thel McCallister died February 3, 2009 in Guthrie, OK. He was born on January 7, 1920 in Mountain Top, AR to Claude Art and Wardna Ruth "Burcham" McCallister.

Harold joined the CCC’s prior to enlisting in the Army in 1940. He served through WWII as a pilot of B-24 bombers, completing 50 missions in the European Theater and earning the rank of Captain. After the war, Harold stayed in the US Air Force before retiring in 1962.

He married Margaret Leora "Lee" Poteet on July 1, 1945 in San Bernardino, CA. They have made their home in Guthrie since 1963. While in Guthrie, they owned and operated McCallister’s Greenhouses before retiring.

Harold was an avid fisherman and hunter his entire life. He also enjoyed rock-hounding and is his later years developed a passion for music. As a self-taught steel guitarist he played with many local bands.

Harold is preceded in death by his parents, daughters Margaret Jean and Elizabeth Lauren, and granddaughter, Kristen Lee. He is survived by his wife, Lee, of Guthrie, daughter Ceilia Stratton of Killeen, TX, granddaughters Kelli Shafer Yadon and husband Craig of Oklahoma City, OK, Maggie Wade and husband Kyle of Guthrie, and Stephanie Lorance of Oklahoma City, and great-granddaughter Kaitlyn Wade of Guthrie.

Memorial services will be held at 2:30 p.m., Friday, February 6, 2009 at Smith Memorial Chapel. Interment will follow at Summit View Cemetery, Guthrie. Services are under the direction of Smith-Gallo Funeral Home, Guthrie.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Companion Hospice, 1314 East Oklahoma Avenue, Guthrie, OK 73044.
