Velma Louise Hood
Born: March 03, 1935
Died: July 28, 2009

Velma Hood was born in Guthrie, Oklahoma, on March 3, 1935, and passed into the loving embrace of her Lord Jesus in Weatherford, Texas, on July 28, 2009, at the age of 74 after a brief but courageous battle with cancer. Services are scheduled for 11:00 a.m., Monday, August 3, 2009 at First Southern Baptist Church of Guthrie, Oklahoma. Burial will follow at Summit View Cemetery, Guthrie. Services are under the direction of Smith-Gallo Funeral Home, Guthrie. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial gifts be given to the building fund of either Lakeshore Drive Baptist Church, 200 S. Lakeshore Dr., Weatherford, TX 76087, or First Southern Baptist Church, 202 E. Noble, Guthrie, OK 73044.

Velma lived seventy-two years in the Guthrie area but spent the final two years of her life in Weatherford, Texas, after the death of her husband, Bill, to whom she was married for forty-seven years. She was an incredibly social and outgoing person who easily made friends wherever she went. Her greatest joys in life were her faith, family, and friends. Velma’s Christian faith was extremely important to her, and she faithfully served the Lord through her local church. During her time in Texas, she also served as a volunteer intake counselor at the Center of Hope, a local faith-based benevolence agency in Weatherford. She delighted in laughter and sharing stories with those she loved, and those she loved were as countless as the stars.

Velma is survived by two brothers: Tom LaRue and his wife, Shirley, of Whittier, CA; and Bill LaRue and his wife, Connie, of Edmond, OK; and three sons: Dr. Tommy Hood and his wife, Paula, of Weatherford, TX; Ray Hood and his wife, Tiffany, of Guthrie, OK; and Andrew Hood, age eleven, of Weatherford, TX.

Visitation will be held at Smith-Gallo Funeral Home on Sunday, 3:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.
